Literacy Night ParticipantSarah Maples Chapter, NSDAR located at Cedar Creek Lake in Texas, was asked to participate in the Mabank ISD’s first-time event to “Promote Summer Reading.” The head media specialist asked the chapter to support this new event across all grade levels, pre-school through high school. Our chapter promotes literacy both in reading and writing, through other activities. This was another a great way to help our local community schools promote literacy. It also allowed us to bring a little creativity and flare to the endeavor by inviting special guests, Martha Washington, Susan B. Anthony, and Undercover Reader.

Readers for Literacy NightWe decided to combine our love of American History with literacy with information about our upcoming student contests. We yearly support Constitution Week activities, American History Essay contests, and Junior American Citizens contests. These grade level specific activities promote patriotism, education, and historical preservation. Three members agreed to dress-up while other chapter members donated books for a give-away. Students had their photos taken with one of the guest celebrities, entered a drawing for books about Christopher Columbus, our Constitution, the suffrage movement, bald eagles and more. Handouts and flashlights were given out, as well as, information sheets about historical events children could color. Everyone had an instant photo sent to an Even the mascot readse-mail address or phone number. The students had lots of fun and Martha Washington even read to the audience about her life with George.

In the process of having fun with literacy, attendees learned how to become a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Chapter members also met teachers and administrators who learned more about the DAR programs available to schools. The chapter promoted literacy and also lined-up participants for the Veterans Day program at our local Veterans Memorial, shared scholarship opportunities and DAR Good Citizen award information.
